Don't miss out on the Grand Finale of D-rift Battle 2008 at Watergrasshill on October 5th! :D Mike Deane is currently leadin the championship but Xtreme Autos driver Nigel Colfer is following closely behind him. Take a look at the tables here: http://www.d-rift.ie/index.php?page=driverstable See who will come out on top! Again we will be running the track backwards as we have done for the last couple of events as we have found this to be better both for spectators and drivers.
So come along and see who will be D-rift Battle Champion 2008!
D-rift Battle and Xtreme Autos would like to say a big Congratulations to Nigel Colfer and Dean Kearney who got excellent results at Mondello yesterday. Nigel Colfer (red 180sx) was almost flawless on Saturday and qualified in 2nd place and then knocked out Neil Donnellan in the Top 32 which got him through to Top 16 on Sunday. Dean Kearney (yellow one-via) qualified among the Top 8 drivers and went on to knock out Christy Carpenter in the Top 32.
On Sunday there was an air of confidence around the Xtreme Autos truck and so there should have been as they both guys gave it their all, which worked out well for them. Colfer kept his calm and collected persona and was consistent with his dexterity all day. In the Top 16 he kncoked out Philip Cash and this brought him to the next battle where he met Eric O’ Sullivan once again. Nigel has beaten O’ Sullivan before so he wasnt intimidated by the talented driver. And his lack of nerves worked to his advantage as after a 6-4 score both ways it was time for a re-run. But Nigel’s 180sx was all over the Honda powered Corolla of O’ Sullivan and Nigel succeeded in getting his ticket to the Top 8. In the Top 8 he met Dennis Healy in his Sr20 powered Corolla but unfortunately Dennis put and end to Nigel’s achievements as Healy had the edge on Nigel and it was the AESR that proceeded to the final. Nigel then went for the 3rd and 4th placement against the highly skilled youngster James Deane but unfortunately James had that little bit more and pushed Nigel to a well deserved 4th place!
Dean Kearney was also showing excellent ability on Sunday as he started by beating the man who stood in his way to 2nd place in the overall standings who was John O’ Connell. I had been watching this guy in practice and he was driving very well, but unfortunately for him, and fortunately for Kearney, he didn’t perform so well in the battles. In the first run he left enough room for Dean to pass him and so this gave Kearney an immediate 10-0 lead. So all he had to do was stay calm for the second run and that’s what he did. In the Top 8 he met none other than Gavin Lenihan who has really been showing how much talent he has got lately. But Dean proved he was the better driver on the day as he is the one who progressed to the Semi Finals. Here he met James Deane. This is a regular occurrence in the drift scene and it’s always good entertainment to watch these two drivers go head to head as they have a similar driving style and they are both as aggressive as each other! The first run was scored 7-3 to James as he was all over Kearney but in the second run Dean was right on top of James and so the judges said they had to score it 8-2 to Kearney as he had more aggression and angle than James. So Kearney got his pass to the Finals where he was up against none other than good friend Dennis Healy. Healy had taken the relaxed approach to the drifting all day and this was really working in his favour. And even more so in the finals as he really gave it his all in the final against Kearney and he just powered through the battles, smoke bellowing from the tyres of his SR20 Corolla and stole the silverware from Dean. But Kearney was still delighted with second place and was even happier for Healy to take first as everyone knew that this was a well deserved win!
1st: Dennis Healy 2nd: Dean Kearney 3rd: James Deane 4th: Nigel Colfer
